Resources
Bader, B. (2014). Fly, butterfly. New York, NY: Grosset & Dunlap.
This book presents, in simple enough language for young children, the story of how Monarch butterflies migrate each year. The text is written with the common core literacy standards in mind. The book is available to read on the kindle cloud reader, so it can be read in any classroom with internet and a projector.
Moncure, J. B., & Peltier, P. (1988). Rabbits' habits. Elgin, IL: Child's World.
This book, available to read on kindle cloud reader, features 3 rabbits who make different kinds of choices and asks students to answer, "which rabbit had a good habit?" The book allows students to think about good attitudes and good choices to be healthy. The book is simple enough to be on level for many of the students in my 1st grade classroom.
Philadelphia Zoo
3400 W Girard Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19104
(215) 243-1100
If I had the resources and the ability, I would certainly consider taking my students on a field trip to the zoo to observe animals for an entire day. The zoo often hosts school children and has many hands-on experiences for students to stay engaged.
School student government
The student government at the school represents authority figures and collective decision-making. It is an example of a community to which the students belong which can contribute to a safer environment. Students can look to the agreed upon responsibilities created and supported by the student government as examples of ways people make choices to be safe.
Youtube videos
Youtube has become somewhere I look not for “video lessons” but for video examples of world phenomena not easily recreated in the classroom. One of the greatest applications is videos of living creatures, especially from scientific researchers, so students can supplement their reading materials with movement and sound.
